Reports: Spain manager Luis de la Fuente interested in USMNT head coach job

The USMNT head coach hunt is extending to everywhere and anywhere.

Spain's Luis de la Fuente linked to USMNT

It has been reported that Spain national team manager, Luis de la Fuente, is interested in the U.S. men’s national team head coach position following the sacking of Gregg Berhalter.

According to The Washington Post, representatives for the Spanish manager contacted the U.S. Soccer Federation about the opening, with Massoud Roushandel — president of Global Elite Sports Group that works closely with de la Fuente’s adviser — confirming to the newspaper that he and Vicente Montes emailed USSF Sporting Director Matt Crocker on Friday about de la Fuente’s interest in the job.

This is unexpectedly huge.

De la Fuente recently extended his contract with the Spanish federation, keeping the 63-year-old ahead of the national team until the 2026 World Cup.

However, after leading the national team to their first continental title in 12 years with the Euros this summer, a large number of fans and American media outlets are speculating that de la Fuente’s reported interest in coming to the United States could be related to the manager trying to negotiate a bigger contract.

The Spaniard became the first manager to win the Under-19 Euros, Under-21 Euros, Nations League and European Championship.

De la Fuente is now one of many managers recently linked to the USMNT head coach job, with Hervé Renard, Steve Cherundolo, Jürgen Klopp and more rising as potential candidates.
