Hervé Renard linked to USMNT as potential head coach candidate

Let the snowball of managers roll.

Hervé Renard linked to USMNT head coach position

Renowned international French coach, Hervé Renard, has emerged as a potential candidate to take over as new USMNT head coach. Renard has reportedly already been contacted by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) over the possibility of taking the reigns of the U.S. men’s national team as the new manager.

Renard, currently managing the France women’s national team, is expected to leave his position following their participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The USMNT would reportedly be joining the race to sign Renard alongside Egypt and Nigeria, with both offers from the African national teams offering the Frenchman a $2 million-a-year salary. Renard is also said to have offers from Saudi Arabian clubs.

Who is Hervé Renard, potential manager for the USMNT?

Renard (55) is a highly-regarded French manager known for his success in international soccer, particularly with African nations.

He made history by leading Zambia to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2012 and replicated this success with the Ivory Coast in 2015, making him the first coach to win the tournament with two different countries — building a reputation for transforming underperforming teams into champions.

Renard most recently managed Saudi Arabia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, leading the country to their historic turn-around victory against eventual tournament champions Argentina — one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

Renard’s diverse managerial history and tactically versatile stints in different confederations could be an asset the USSF finds valuable, with the 55-year-old being known for continuously adapting his tactics and style of play to his personnel and player pool.

The announcement of the USMNT’s new head coach will likely come after the Summer Olympics, with U.S. Soccer sporting director, Matt Crocker, expecting to officially name the new manager in September.
