Brookings police are investigating the incident for possible assault. The South Dakota High School Activities Association has also condemned the incident.
"It was a completely unacceptable action. There's no place for it in sports or anywhere else. I'll be working with both schools through the situation," SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos said.
Bergman’s red card comes with a one-game suspension and a sportsmanship course requirement, but time will tell if he faces legal consequences for his action.
The game was delayed for 10 minutes following the fight and Brookings went on to win the game.
