USWNT star Trinity Rodman to become highest-paid women’s player in the world with Spirit

Rodman is staying in D.C.

Trinity Rodman will be staying in the nation’s capital for three more years as the United States women’s national team icon signed a record-breaking contract with the Washington Spirit on Thursday.

Per ESPN, Rodman’s new deal with the Spirit is worth more than $2 million annually making her the highest-paid women’s soccer player in the world.

Rodman staying with the Spirit was far from a foregone conclusion just a few months ago as there were talks she could be headed to Europe. The National Women’s Soccer League and Europe’s biggest clubs have been engaging in a “tug-of-war” over claiming America’s best players.

A growing number of USWNT stars have departed the NWSL to play overseas including Naomi Girma, Alyssa Thompson, Sam Coffey, Crystal Dunn, Emily Fox and Jenna Nighswonger.

It wouldn’t have been a shock to see Rodman be the next NWSL talent to make the journey overseas. The 23-year-old Spirit star described her new contract as a historic step.

"I think it's a monumental and game-changing moment right now,” Rodman said about her new contract. “I can't even describe in words what it feels like. Obviously, everyone's going to have their different thoughts and opinions about it, but I've never really cared. So, that doesn't change anything for me.

"I've always had a vision of kind of an idea of what I want my legacy to be and continue to be. For me, we're doing that, with help obviously, and I'm so grateful for that. But yeah, I think this is just opening up opportunities for American girls with dreams, and I'm one and was one of them, and so I'm very grateful about that.”
