Watch: Wild scenes in Brazil as severed pig’s head thrown on field during Corinthians-Palmeiras game

South America takes their soccer incredibly seriously. Look no further than Monday’s derby match between Corinthians and Palmeiras where the home fans threw a severed pig’s head onto the field while Palmeiras were taking a corner kick.

The heated rivalry between the Brazilian clubs is no joke. How someone managed to smuggle in a pig’s head is beyond us, but the disgusting object was lobbed onto the field in the 29th minute.

Corinthians pig head incident

Corinthians forward Yuri Alberto removed the head from the field but said he nearly injured himself in the process because he didn’t realize what the object was.

“I almost broke my foot,” Alberto told Globo Esporte afterwards. “I thought it was something else, a cushion, but it was a pig’s head, I almost hurt myself.”

What a freak injury that would’ve been for Alberto to break his foot from a pig’s head thrown on the field by his own fans.

This isn’t the first time in soccer history that a pig’s head has been thrown onto the field. The infamous Luis Figo pig head incident in 2002 saw fans at the Nou Camp hurl one at Figo in his first return to Barcelona since his transfer to rival Real Madrid.

The reason a pig’s head was used on Monday was due to Corinthians fans using “pig” as an insult toward Palmeiras in the past.

Brazil police are investigating the incident.
