Hope Solo announces she’ll be returning to field for first time in nine years

Ladies and gentlemen, Hope Solo is coming back. Legendary United States women’s national goalkeeper Solo is set to make her first appearance in the sport since her retirement in 2016 as she’s entering a team into The Soccer Tournament (TST) this summer.

TST is an annual 7-vs-7 tournament in Cary, North Carolina, where the winning team takes home $1 million. Solo, 43, announced she’s entering a team in the women’s tournament where she could face former teammates like Ali Krieger, Heather O’Reilly and Carli Lloyd who play for the US Women squad.

The ex-USWNT goalkeeper will be a player-manager.

"I am incredibly excited not only to enter Solo FC in The Soccer Tournament, but also make my comeback to the field at one of the most exciting events in soccer right now," Solo said.

"TST has done some amazing things to grow the game for women and I'm proud to be a part of it. I'm as competitive as ever, and I can't wait to unveil the team that will win the $1 million grand prize."

Solo’s career ended controversially following the USWNT’s loss to Sweden in the 2016 Rio Olympics. After the Swedes won on penalties Solo called her opponents “a bunch of cowards” in response to their defensive tactics. U.S. Soccer then terminated her national team contract and suspended her for six months because of her comments.

Solo never played again after the incident.

After her retirement she made headlines in 2022 after being found passed out intoxicated behind the wheel of a car with her two-year-old twins in the back seat. She pleaded guilty to driving while impaired. She was also charged with resisting arrest and misdemeanor child abuse, however those charges were dropped.

Solo apologized for the incident saying it was one of the lowest moments for her.

“Easily the worst mistake of my life. I underestimated what a destructive part of my life alcohol had become,” she said. “The upside of making a mistake this big is that hard lessons are learned quickly. Learning these lessons has been difficult, and at times, very painful.”

Solo will be building a squad for Solo FC at TST with the competition running from June 4-9.
