Records are, as the cliché goes, made to be broken. But this is one record we hope no one ever comes close to breaking. Gerardo Bedoya was a defender and defensive midfielder from 1995 to 2015. He played mostly in his native Colombia but also had stints in Argentina and Mexico. While accumulating more than 600 appearances with club and country, he set the most dubious record in all of soccer. Bedoya didn’t score often and he wasn’t exactly a brilliant playmaker, but what Bedoya did better than any other player in the history of the game was the one thing players typically try to avoid at all costs. Throughout his long playing career, Bedoya received a world record 46 red cards, 46! The next closest player is Cyril Rool, who was sent off 27 times. Bedoya will never be confused with any of the game’s all-time greats, but he will likely always be remembered as the dirtiest soccer player of all time. But, despite retiring in 2015, he’s not done being sent off. Bedoya began his coaching career at Independiente Sante Fe in Colombia in 2016. He was sent to the stands in his first match on the sidelines. Some people just never change.
