How Fast Is Leroy Sané? He Might Be The Quickest Footballer On The Planet

How fast is Leroy Sané? The 22-year-old Manchester City winger experienced a somewhat subdued first season in England, but he exploded into life last year after scoring 10 goals and adding 15 assists in 32 Premier League appearances. The native of Essen, Germany, was named the PFA Young Player of the Year for his contributions to City’s march to the title, but he was curiously omitted from manager Joachim Low’s World Cup squad (we all know how that turned out for die Mannschaft).

Sane’s wide play could only be described as blistering, and the numbers certainly back up that statement. According to Opta, Sane recorded the highest top speed in the Premier League last season. He was clocked at 35.48 kph (22.05 mph), which is actually the fastest speed ever recorded in the EPL (granted, the statistic has only been measured since 2014, when Jamie Vardy set the previous record).

Sane used to play his club ball for Schalke 04, and that recorded time would’ve also been the best in the Bundesliga last term. Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi recorded the fast speed in Germany last season at 21.92 mph. Sane was 0.13 mph faster than that.

If we’re to trust C.F. Pachuca’s search for the fastest player on the planet, which was conducted in 2017, Sane’s speed would make him the third fastest footballer in the world, trailing only Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and Flamengo’s Orlando Berrio.

At just 22 years of age, it’s frightening to think of the footballer that Sane could become over the next five years. He added an impressive amount of end product to his game last season, and he’ll be looking to deliver in the Champions League this time around.

With Raheem Sterling on the right, Sane on the left and Kyle Walker bombing forward from right back, Manchester City boast one of the quickest sides in the history of club football.
