El Tri Is Coming To The Rose Bowl: Mexico Announces Three More Friendlies Before World Cup

The upcoming Mexico friendlies schedule was released on Tuesday, and it was announced that El Tri will play Peru and Colombia in the U.S. in September. There will also be a third friendly in November vs. Sweden in Girona, Spain.

Mexico Friendlies Schedule 2022

  • Aug. 31: Mexico vs. Paraguay at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta, Georgia)
  • Sept. 24: Mexico vs. Peru at the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California)
  • Sept. 27: Mexico vs. Colombia at Levi’s Stadium (Santa Clara, California)
  • Nov. 16: Mexico vs. Sweden at Montilivi Stadium (Girona, Spain)

Mexico vs. CONMEBOL

The “MEXTOUR” will wrap up in California as El Tri finalizes preparation for the World Cup. The latest three teams Mexico has scheduled have their pros and cons but are solid teams.

None of the three new teams Mexico has scheduled — Peru, Colombia and Sweden — are World Cup-bound teams. Typically scheduling opponents against other teams going to the World Cup is preferred. Mexico can probably get a pass however as these three opponents are all top 20 teams in FIFA’s latest rankings.

It’s also clear to see that Mexico is doing its homework on CONMEBOL and preparing for Argentina in Group C. After the game against Colombia, El Tri will have played half of South America’s teams.

The battles against South America didn’t start great for Mexico suffering a molly whopping against Uruguay and then a ho-hum scoreless draw vs. Ecuador. If Mexico doesn’t win at least two of the next three friendlies it might be time to start sounding the alarm bells.

Mexico vs. Sweden

Mexico is notorious for scheduling friendlies outside of FIFA international windows. That appears to be the case again with El Tri scheduling the Sweden game only six days before the team’s World Cup opener against Poland.

It will be good for Mexico to get a taste of UEFA opposition before the Poland game. It’s speculated that the Mexico-Poland game will be the decider as to who finishes second in the group.

Poland secured its World Cup qualification via a playoff against Sweden. Perhaps Tata Martino can ask the Swedes for a few pointers on what not to do against Poland.
