Watch: Lionel Messi almost scores Olimpico goal vs. boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys

Lionel Messi has scored pretty much every goal in the book… besides one he keeps attempting with Inter Miami.

Inter Miami faced off against Lionel Messi’s boyhood Argentinian club, Newell’s Old Boys, in the MLS team’s last preseason match held at DRV Pink Stadium this Thursday. Miami coach Gerardo Martino also played and managed Newell’s in the past.

The match, with a handful of highlights, ended in a 1-1 draw, sending Inter Miami off into the 2024 MLS Season for their debut against Real Salt Lake at home on Feb. 21.

Much of the same from Miami over their seven preparation game preseason ahead of the league’s restart.

However, one of the most notable highlights of the match came from Lionel Messi in an effort that show’s the Ballon d’Or winner's wish to score this type of goal before he retires.

MLS keepers beware.

Just before the halftime whistle from the referee, Lionel Messi stepped up to take a corner kick for Miami and was this close to scoring a worldie worthy of a thousand replays again. Well, close enough.

Despite Miami having a ‘nightmare’ of a preseason around the world, one thing we learned from Lionel Messi at the start of the year is that he’s eager to score a goal directly from a corner kick, or “Olympic goal.”

The Argentine legend was very close to scoring one back in January in their friendly against FC Dallas, with only the keeper’s fingertip-stop denying us from another classic Messi goal.

Step out of your box and Messi will be looking to punish you.

He even tried this technique with Argentina at the end of 2023, with this attempt arguably being his closest.

Do you think we’ll see a Messi “Olympic goal” before he retires?
