Everything You Need To Know About ESPN’s Euro 2020 Coverage

With no due respect to the Concacaf Nations League, meaningful international soccer returns from a Covid-induced hiatus with Euro 2020, slated for June 11 to July 11. Hosted in 11 cities across Europe, the European Championship will mark the first major international tournament since the Covid-19 pandemic struck the planet. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Euro 2020 in the U.S., from TV to streaming.

Aside from some World Cup qualifiers here and there, it’s been two years since major international soccer graced our TV screens and computer monitors. Euro 2020 was postponed to 2021 by the ongoing pandemic, only heightening the anticipation for one of the best international tournaments in the world.

We’re not going to try to pretend Euro 2020 is the best tournament in the world — like ESPN is trying to do (see promo below) — but it’s at least in the top three soccer tournaments this summer. With that in mind, ESPN and Univision have put forth ambitious game plans to cover the tournament.

How To Watch Euro 2020 In U.S.

The European championship broadcast rights are owned by two entities in the U.S.: ESPN in English and Univision in Spanish. Here’s a brief rundown of where you can find Euro 2020 matches on TV and streaming.

Euro 2020 TV, Streaming Guide

  • Dates: June 11-July 11, 2021
  • TV: ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, Univision, TUDN
  • Streaming: ESPN+, ESPN App, PrendeTV

How To Watch Euro 2020 In U.S. In English

  • TV: ESPN, ESPN2, ABC
  • Streaming: ESPN+, ESPN App

In English, 39 matches will be televised on ESPN, with seven more on ESPN2 and five on ABC. The semifinals and final will all be on ESPN. (A full Euro 2020 TV schedule is available at the bottom of this story.)

Additionally, every Euro 2020 match will be available on the ESPN+ streaming service, perfect for those without a cable TV subscription. ESPN has promiesd each match will include a 30-minute pregame show, halftime studio coverage and postgame analysis.

ESPN will turn to College GameDay’s Rece Davis as its lead studio host for the Euros. Davis, a 25-year ESPN veteran, hasn’t hosted a soccer tournament for the Worldwide Leader since Euro 2008 and World Cup 2006. Other studio hosts include Kelly Cates of Sky Sports, Sebastian Salazar, Kay Murray and Dalen Cuff.

Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman will be ESPN’s lead announcer team, for better or worse. Personally, I’d rather the Ian Darke-Stewart Robson or Derek Rae-Efan Ekoku pairings lead ESPN’s coverage, but that does show the depth of broadcasters ESPN has assembled to call the games this summer. Mark Donaldson-Matteo Bonetti and Steve Cangialosi-Alejandro Moreno are the other two pairings.

ESPN tried to round up a large cast of studio analysts and I’m sorry to report Steve McManaman is one of them. The loud-mouthed Englishman is back with ESPN this summer, but he’s joined by a few players who have actually won World Cups: Italian icon Alessandro Del Piero, 99er Julie Foudy and Germans Jürgen Klinsmann and Sami Khedira. Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, Shaka Hislop, Steve Nicol, Steve Cherundolo and Craig Burley are also among the analysts, as is former referee Mark Clattenburg. ESPN is sending four reporters to Europe: Sam Borden, Martin Ainstein, Archie Rhind-Tutt and Alexis Nunes.

“Every time ESPN hosts a major soccer tournament, the goal is to assemble an authentic, diverse and accomplished talent roster that can draw from experiences in this tournament, and offer smart analysis based on that perspective,” ESPN coordinating producer Chris Alexopoulos said in a news release. “We are thrilled to welcome back teammates who have been with us since EURO 2008, and excited to introduce some new names to ESPN’s presentation.”

Overall ESPN has assembled a team that should provide superb coverage for Americans eager to watch Euro 2020. The tournament will go head-to-head with Fox’s and Univision’s coverage of the 2021 Copa América.

How To Watch Euro 2020 In U.S. In Spanish

  • TV: Univision, TUDN
  • Streaming: PrendeTV, fuboTV

For those looking for how to watch Euro 2020 in Spanish in the U.S., Univision is the place to be. Or, more precisely, PrendeTV is the place to be for most of the tournament.

PrendeTV is Univision’s new ad-supported streaming service; it will stream 40 of the 51 Euro 2020 matches live. The remaining 11 matches will be on Univision and TUDN, including the semifinals and final.

Like ESPN, Univision has an impressive lineup of talent for the tournament, including analysts Mauro Camoranesi, Carles Puyol and Javier Zanetti. Unlike ESPN, Univision also has the TV rights to this summer’s Copa América, meaning many of its broadcasters will be split between the two competitions.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver such a prestigious property to our fanáticos by leveraging the power of Univision’s media portfolio,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Univision president of Sports, in a news release. “The EURO is a can’t-miss competition that captivates the entire soccer world, and we are proud to be able to make these matches easily accessible to fans in the U.S.”
