PSG lost more than a million followers on Instagram after Lionel Messi's exit

The unhappy marriage between Lionel Messi and PSG is over. After the 3-2 defeat vs. Clermont Foot on Saturday, the Argentine superstar went home, packed his suitcase and said au revoir to the French capital.

The thing is that when Messi exited, thousands of his fans also abandoned the club in a stampede.

PSG Instagram followers plummet after Messi's exit

When PSG posted its goodbye message to the world champion, their Instagram base was over 71.4 million followers.

One day after, the number was 69 million.

That's 1.5 million fans fewer in a whack. (Update: It's since dropped to 68.6M.)

Surprising? Not totally. Many Messi fans made statements on PSG's posts to unfollow the club, seeing how ungrateful their supporters were to the Argentine during his two seasons there.

Sure, Messi had a lukewarm first year with PSG (11 goals + 15 assists), but in the second one, he did everything he could for a team with no history in Europe, creating 21 goals and 20 assists across all competitions.

However, despite his performance, PSG fans constantly booed him, turning him basically into the scapeGOAT for all their failures. They booed him after Argentina defeated France in the World Cup final, booed him after PSG was eliminated from the Champions League, booed him after a trip to Saudi Arabia, booed him because why not, and booed him on his departure.

And Messi fans didn't forget by clicking the unfollow button when it was time to do it.

What's next for Messi? His heart is set on a return to Barcelona, but the Spanish giant has several financial impediments to solve before adding him to the squad. He's going to wait, but not forever.

Saudi Arabia and MLS also wait.
