Stanford women’s soccer team survived a thrilling 1-1 (4-2) penalty shootout victory vs. Arkansas in the NCAA DI women’s soccer championship tournament on Sunday but had a bizarre moment at the end of the first half.
Stanford trailed in the first half of the Round of 16 matchup and thought they had scored an incredible equalizer in the stroke of halftime.
Junior forward Lumi Kostmayer took a beautiful shot from 25 yards out that beat the goalkeeper and nestled into the back of the net. There was only one problem: the clock had hit 0:00 milliseconds before the ball went in.
Stanford goal ruled out
Even though she got her shot off before 0 seconds, this doesn’t count as a goal because it wasn’t over the goal line in 0 seconds. I get it. Rules are rules, but that rule is whack @NCAASoccer pic.twitter.com/z83YwG0xqC

Kostmayer was robbed of the equalizer due to what might be the dumbest rule in all of soccer. College soccer uses a clock that counts down and once it shows 0:00 the half or game ends immediately, even if a team is about to score.
Kostmayer’s goal not being given is exactly why everyone else in the world uses a clock that counts up rather than down.
The NCAA need to get rid of this ludicrous rule once and for all.
Stanford went on to get their deserved equalizer with a lasered effort in the second half courtesy of freshman midfielder Charlotte Kohler.

The Cardinal went on to win in the shootout and book a spot in the Round of 8.
