The headline has been written soccer romance folks! Kristie Mewis engaged to Sam Kerr.

Two years ago, the USWNT midfielder and Australia’s superstar shared a touching moment on the field following the USA’s victory vs. Australia in the bronze medal game at the Tokyo Olympics. The pair confirmed they were dating following that moment.

Despite Mewis, 32, playing for Gotham FC in the States and Kerr, 30, representing Chelsea in England, the two have made the long-distance relationship work. Now the two lovers are taking things to the next step and are engaged.

There were rumors and hints of the two being engaged like when Mewis was spotted wearing a ring, but now their engagement is official.

Mewis spoke with PEOPLE about the engagement saying that Kerr has been a huge addition to her support system especially when the USWNT were knocked out of the World Cup.

“(She’s) just been everything,” Mewis said to PEOPLE. “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics.”

Fans noticed that while the rest of the USWNT flew home following the loss to Sweden, Mewis stayed behind to cheer on her partner during Australia’s home World Cup run.
