Legendary FC Barcelona left-back and now Inter Miami star, Jordi Alba, took no time in criticizing Major League Soccer’s playoff format after Inter Miami’s devastating loss in the first round of the 2024 MLS playoffs.
Jordi Alba critizes MLS format after first-round exit with inter Miami
The 35-year-old Spaniard has placed himself under the MLS limelight after quickly choosing to criticize MLS’ playoff format following The Herons’ huge upset-loss against Atlanta United through a three-game series.
Despite being atop of the regular season table, winning the 2024 Supporters Shield and breaking the record for the most regular season points in league history, the Fort Lauderdale club's postseason run was ultimately cut short by a team who placed ninth. This, to Alba, is what is unfair in the format.
"We were the most consistent team, we broke the points record, we had a good season but what we wanted was to win these playoffs…” said Alba.
“I think this format is a bit unfair. It's been done for many years but I think it should be the champion of one conference against the champion of the other, to make it as fair as possible" he added.

Alba’s discontent was also present shortly after the final whistle at Chase Stadium on Saturday, with the former FC Barcelona man confronting central referee, Lukasz Szpala and calling him “cagón” or “wimp.”
