This pretty much sums up the Dynamo’s season.
Mexico international and Houston Dynamo captain, Héctor Herrera, was sent off after appearing to have spit at the referee during the MLS Cup Playoffs match against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.
Watch: Héctor Herrera red card vs. Seattle Sounders, Mexican midfielders 'spits' at ref
The former Porto FC midfielder saw the red after receiving a yellow for a foul in Seattle’s half, with the Mexican disagreeing with the call and ‘spitting’ at referee Villarrea Armando as he walked in the other direction. Despite the referee not noticing, a quick call from the VAR and check terminated the experienced player’s 2024 MLS season.
I'm sorry, Hector Herrera spit at the *referee* to get sent off in a must-win home playoff game?

The Mexican’s send-off in the 66th minute ultimately sentenced Dynamo to a defensive stance for the remainder of the game, with Houston eventually crashing out of the MLS Cup playoffs after losing both matches against the Sounders through penalty shoot outs.

Herrera is expected to receive a hefty suspension, with fans speculating we may not see the midfielder appear for Houston until mid-March in the 2025 MLS season.
