Nightmare Mistake In The Back From Flamengo Sends Palmeiras To Copa Libertadores Crown

Deyverson, a 30-year-old forward who has played in Portugal, Germany, Spain and Brazil, may have scored the biggest goal of his career on Saturday in Montevideo, Uruguay. Deyverson pounced on a horrible miscue from the Flamengo defense to help Palmeiras lift the 2021 Copa Libertadores trophy after a 2-1 win in extra time.

Raphael Veiga gave Palmeiras a lead five minutes in but Flamengo equalized through Gabigol with 18 minutes to play. In extra time, it was a shocking mistake from Andrea Pereira that gifted Deyverson a one-on-one with keeper Diego Alves, who couldn’t get enough of his foot onto the shot that deflected into the back of his net.

Copa Libertadores Final 2021 Highlights

After the goal, Deyverson appeared to be overcome with emotion, on the verge of tears after lifting Palmeiras to a second straight Copa Libertadores title.

Flamengo cruised through the knockout rounds by a combined score of 18-3 but found itself trailing moments into the final when David Luiz decided to slide 10 yards from the cross to allow Raphael Veiga to fire home.

Gabriel Barbosa, the tournament’s top scorer, netted his 11th goal of the competition in the 72nd minute to equalize, beating Weverton at his near post.

In extra time, David Luiz’s innocent pass to Pereira turned into a nightmare and not even Gabigol and Chelsea loanee Kenedy could find a way past a determined defense as Palmeiras was once again crowned the champion of South America.
