Athletico Paranaense won its first ever Copa do Brazil on Wednesday, beating Internacional 3-1 on aggregate to add another trophy to its recent successful run that includes the 2018 Copa Sudamericana. A Brazilian soccer fan supporting the club, however, lost a hand in the process.
Before Athletico headed to Porto Alegre for the second leg of the final at Estádio Beira-Rio, supporters of the Curitaba club waved farewell to the players at the airport. One Brazilian soccer fan, whose name we have been unable to discern, was waving a flare when it exploded.
The loud boom caught everyone by surprise and once everyone realized what had happened, most pulled out their phones to capture it on video, because that’s the world we live in.
Fortunately, some people acted quickly to help the man. A police officer made a makeshift tourniquet to limit the bleeding and the fan was rushed to the hospital. Local media reported that what was left of his hand had to be amputated due to the extent of the injuries.
Remarkably, immediately after the explosion, the fan was able to stay conscious and even standing as he awaited medical attention. Here’s a somewhat SFW photo of the fan after. We’ve cropped out the bloodied hand (the curious can keep reading for the more gruesome images).
Sadly, this is just another in a string of Brazilian soccer fan injuries. In August, a São Paulo fan fell from the upper deck of Morumbi stadium, falling on two other fans who were also hurt.
In this incident, the poor fella’s hand was torn to shreds by the explosion worse than Jason Pierre-Paul and if you’re at all squeamish, you probably should’ve stopped reading this article by now. But if you must see, below is a video of the incident (at least until Twitter takes it down).
