Wolfsburg Proves Barcelona Femení Is Human — 45-Game Win Streak Snapped But Barça Advance To UWCL Final

Barcelona is heading to its third UEFA Women’s Champions League final in four years after defeating Wolfsburg 5-3 on aggregate in the semifinals. The second leg of the tie is a smudge on Barcelona’s record as Wolfsburg snapped the Spanish giants’ 45-game win-streak and ended any thoughts of a perfect season with a 2-0 victory.

The number of days between Saturday and Barcelona’s last competitive defeat is 333. Needless to say, this Barcelona team doesn’t lose. Atlético Madrid was the last team to get the best of Barcelona on June 1, 2021, with a 4-3 Primera División victory.

Barcelona’s 5-1 victory in the first leg provided enough cushion for the Spanish side to get its first win over Wolfsburg. Barcelona has set the all-time attendance record for a women’s soccer game twice this Champions League season at Camp Nou. The women’s soccer fever spread to Germany as Wolfsburg set its attendance record.

Barcelona Femení vs Wolfsburg Highlights

The first half finished scoreless with Barcelona missing out on multiple chances to open the scoring. Saturday’s game was the first time since Aug. 25, 2020, that Barcelona was shutout (a 1-0 loss to Wolfsburg in the 2020 UWCL semifinal).

In the second half two Wolfsburg goals in the span of 15 minutes brought a seemingly dead contest back to life. Tabea Waßmuth grabbed the first in the 47th minute and Jil Roord scored from distance in the 60th to make it 2-0. Suddenly the German underdogs were right back in it.

The remaining 30 minutes featured end-to-end play and the rare sight of Barcelona looking uncomfortable. Wolfsburg saw the better scoring opportunities and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas found herself needing to make goal line clearances instead of her usual scoring.

Wolfsburg was unable to make the improbable four-goal comeback but can keep their heads high knowing they defeated and shutout the most dominant team Europe has ever seen.

Barcelona will face the winner of Lyon vs. PSG in the UWCL final in Turin, Italy, on May 21.
