Kylian Mbappé and PSG will take part in their first Champions League final on Sunday, a highly anticipated clash with Bayern Munich. The two teams have by far been the best in Europe this season, with one loss between them in the entire competition. The two teams have plenty in common, from their connections to Barcelona’s failures to their shared domestic hegemony. There will be one more link between the clubs on Sunday in the form of the dazzling new Kylian Mbappé pink boots.
This week, Nike debuted the new Mercurial Superfly Mbappé Rosa cleats, a pair of shock-pink boots the Frenchman will wear in the Champions League final on Sunday. The color pays homage to a former Bayern Munich star.
The Mbappé pink boots are an iteration on the Mercurial Superfly 7, which came out late last year. The coloring is a throwback to the 2008 Mercurial Pink Panther, ones he begged his parents to buy him (he was just 10 at the time) because Franck Ribery, a fellow Frenchman, was wearing them for Bayern.
“When I was a young boy around 10 years old I saw these incredible pink boots being worn by some of my favorite players in the world,” Mbappé said. “I wanted those boots so badly. I begged my parents to get some and they told me that if I worked really hard and did well at school for long enough I could get these beautiful boots. I listened to my parents and worked so hard that in the end they had to get them for me. I was so happy! Now, I am so pleased that Nike has created my second product collection with these special boots for the biggest club match of my career! What a dream to wear them. They are the new versions of the pink boots I loved when I was a young boy, and this is so special for me to work to achieve my dreams in these boots.”
It’s cool to see this whole thing come full circle; Mbappé is now playing for a French powerhouse against Ribery’s former team in the biggest club match of the year.
The 21-year-old was spotting wearing the new shoes in practice earlier this week. We can’t wait to see what he does in them on Sunday.
