Red Card For Handball Is Straight Out Of Elementary School Recess

That feeling you have is one of extreme déjà vu: This is elementary school recess all over again. You’ve drafted teams, painstakingly setup field dimensions, bickered and argued over whose cone-defined goalmouth is unfairly sized and now it’s finally time to play — there’s not much time left in recess now.

Kickoff!

But damn, there’s the class-clown — he doesn’t care much for sports (and that’s OK), but he loves ruining the only moment of your day where you actually feel a bit of joy (and that’s not OK) — grabbing the cone posts and chucking them askance before making a beeline for the ball, picking that up and sprinting away toward the woods.

Jesus Christ.

In the time it takes to get the ball back, recess is over. Back to the doldrums of math and the class clown attempting to stab you with his pencil for the third straight day of the week. That’s the role Blackburn’s Derrick Williams played yesterday in the League Cup.

In actuality, the situation was even more bizarre.

The Premier League side went up 2-0 by the 58th minute through Junior Stanislas and Jordan Ibe, only for the Championship team to level the score by the 72nd minute through Craig Conway and Adam Armstrong.

With the match seemingly destined for penalties, Williams was sent off for this handball. Williams was only acting to preserve the drama of the shootout, but Callum Wilson got on the end of a corner just moments later to send Bournemouth through to the Round of 16 at the death.
