Well, that was embarrassing.
Stuttgart edged 10-man Werder Bremen 2-1 for its first win of the season on Saturday, but Die Roten nearly threw the three points away — quite literally.
With Stuttgart nursing a 1-0 lead with a man advantage after Milos Veljkovic was sent off in the first half, Borna Sosa threw the ball into the back of his own net. From a throw in. From about 30 yards out.
What?
This Stuttgart own goal gave Werder Bremen a shock equalizer with just over 20 minutes to play.
Goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was credited with the own goal, though it’s debatable if he actually touched the ball. Regardless, he deserves the blame for being caught flat-footed on what should have been an easily controlled pass.
This hurts to watch

Fortunately for both Sosa and Zieler, Stuttgart pulled out the victory thanks to this finish from Gonzalo Castro in the 75th minute.
The win pulled Stuttgart out of the relegation spots. The wonderfully named Anastasios Donis opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
Werder Bremen suffered its first loss of the season despite owning 61 percent of possession, even while playing down a man for about an hour. But when your only goal comes from a crazy Stuttgart own goal, you probably don’t deserve to win.
