Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman admits she wants to play overseas

Trinity Rodman leaving NWSL for a club overseas is a matter of when and not if revealed the Washington Spirit forward in an interview with ESPN Futbol W.

The 22-year-old USWNT star is preparing to play in her fifth season with the Washington Spirit since being drafted by the club in 2021. While she’s focused on the Spirit’s upcoming NWSL season which begins on Friday, she admits that playing overseas is an idea she fancies.

"I've always thought about playing overseas at some point in my career," Rodman said. "I think I would kick myself if I retired and hadn't done that. So it's just a matter of when, I think.”

American stars playing for clubs in Europe has become a hot trend in the past year with more and more big names leaving the NWSL. This year Naomi Girma, Jenna Nighswonger and Crystal Dunn all departed their respective NWSL teams for European outfits.

The number of USWNT players in Europe has reached double digits.

Rodman’s contract with the Spirit runs until the end of 2025 with the option for another year. She’ll have a big decision to make on where she'll play in 2026.
