The Supercopa Argentina is a relatively new competition pitting the winner of the Argentine Primera División and the Copa Argentina, first played in 2012. Wednesday night’s edition was by far the best one yet, with a River Plate vs Boca Juniors Supercopa Superclásico.
It’s rare for the Superclásico to be a part of a cup final. The only other River Plate vs Boca Juniors match in such an event was 1976, a Boca victory.
Given the rarity of such an event, the scenes were epic, even for a match that doesn’t hold too much weight, kind of like the Community Shield in England.

The scenes weren’t too abnormal for a Superclásico. Here’s how the pregame for a typical match between Argentina’s two most historic sides plays out.

River Plate won Wednesday’s Supercopa Superclásico 2-0 behind a penalty scored by Gonzalo Martinez and this fantastic counterattacking goal from Ignacio Scocco, though Boca fans will argue they should’ve been given a penalty on the other end.
The win came against the grain for league play this season. Boca Juniors has a comfortable eight-point lead atop the Superliga standings. River Plate, meanwhile, is all the way in 18th place, with exactly half the points of Boca (46-23). Los Millonarios fans will hope this victory spurs their club to turning around its season.

The best moment of the River Plate vs Boca Juniors Supercopa came afterword, when man of the match goalkeeper Franco Armani celebrated like a king. Well, some kind of king.
