Bernardo Silva Lands Massive New Deal, But Where Does He Rank Among City’s Top Paid?

Despite UEFA opening an investigation of Manchester City for possible Financial Fair Play violations, the club is looking in glorious shape for the future following news today that midfield maestro Bernardo Silva has elected to renew his contract until the summer of 2025 with a deal that puts him amongst City’s highest earners.

The Portuguese midfielder’s deal quickly follows on previous news of extensions for Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus — all players who are aged 24 and under who’ll lead the side for years to come.

Bernardo has become an integral part during his second season at the club. Due to his versatility in midfield and on the right-hand side of City’s attack, only Ederson and Laporte have logged more Premier League minutes this campaign.

He’s got five goals and six assists in 29 EPL appearances, as well as three goals and one assist in seven Champions League games.

While time might be slowly catching up with the likes of Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho and David Silva, City’s vision and spending power — aligned with the demands of Pep Guardiola — means that it’s guaranteed to be a European power over the course of the next decade.

But speaking of spending power, it’s interesting to note that City’s certainly trending upward with regards to average player salary. According to Business Insider, the team’s average pay per player came in at number 24 amongst all sports teams in 2017. In 2018, City rose to number 20 on the list with an average salary of $7.89 million.

That number was topped by PSG ($8.03M), Atletico ($8.10M), Bayern ($8.36M), Man United ($8.6M), Juventus ($8.85M), Real Madrid ($10.6M) and Barcelona ($13.8M) in the world of football, but don’t expect City to stand pat.
