Uruguay’s clash with Bolivia in the World Cup qualifiers was a dramatic reminder of the challenges teams face when playing at high altitudes in Bolivia.
The match, held at the Municipal Stadium in El Alto—standing at over 13,615 feet above sea level—saw Atlético Madrid and Uruguay center-back José María Giménez struggling with the severe altitude to the point of resorting to the use of portable oxygen.

The 30-year-old experienced defender was visibly gasping for air in the final minutes of the match. Taking a brief pause in play, Giménez walked over to Uruguay’s goal, where he grabbed a portable oxygen tank to help him catch his breath.
The oxygen boost was a necessary tool to combat the lack of oxygen at such high elevations, a challenge that has been infamous for teams traveling to Bolivia. "The video speaks for itself" said Uruguay on their X account.

For Uruguay, the altitude proved to be a significant handicap, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw. Despite their efforts, the Garra Charrúa couldn't find the back of the net, and Bolivia's home advantage became clear once again.
Bolivia are now undefeated in their last five home games, with three wins and two draws, showing a distinct contrast to their away form, which has been much weaker, with four losses and just one win — against bottom-of-the-table Chile.
