Jadon Sancho Hits Hat-Trick With 17-Year-Old American Gio Reyna Providing An Assist

After a scoreless first half, Borussia Dortmund shifted through the gears in the second 45 to overwhelm Paderborn 6-1 on Sunday. The match featured a couple of historic firsts for Dortmund: 20-year-old English phenom Jadon Sancho notched his first professional hat-trick, and 17-year-old American prodigy Giovanni Reyna registered his first Bundesliga assist.

Paderborn — last-place in the division and an almost certainty for relegation — somehow managed to keep it 0-0 at Benteler-Arena for 53 minutes, but Thorgan Hazard opened the scoring for the visitors before Sancho scored his first in the 57th minute. Sancho celebrated his goal by revealing a T-shirt with a “Justice for George Floyd” message. This continued the Bundesliga’s show of solidarity with the protests that’ve engulfed the U.S. — earlier in the day, Gladbach’s Marcus Thuram took a knee following his goal.

Sancho’s second restored Dortmund’s two-goal cushion in the 74th minute.

From there, Dortmund ran riot in the closing stages with Achraf Hakimi scoring in the 85th, Marcel Schmelzer in the 89th and Sancho with his hat-trick at 90+2’.

The counter was started by Reyna, who released Sancho with a well-weighted ball and no Paderborn defenders in sight.

The young Englishman now has 17 goals and 17 assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances.
