The Reason American Teen Gio Reyna Was A Late Scratch From His First BVB Start

American teenager Giovanni Reyna suffered an injury Saturday while warming up for his first start in the Bundesliga.

The 17-year-old midfielder was scratched from the lineup before Borussia Dortmund's 4-0 win against rival Schalke as the German league resumed play amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Gio Reyna will be replaced by Thorgan Hazard in the Starting XI as a result of an injury sustained during warm up," the team tweeted minutes before the match.

Details of the injury were not immediately available.

Reyna made his Dortmund debut in January and scored his first professional goal on Feb. 4 against Werder Bremen. He also scored a goal in his Champions League debut on Feb. 18 against Paris Saint-Germain.

Reyna has competed for the U.S. youth teams since 2016. His father is Claudio Reyna, a longtime member of the U.S. Men's National Team, and his mother is former U.S. Women's National Team member Danielle Egan.
