Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory (4-5 aggregate defeat) to Paris Saint-Germain was an enthralling and chaotic Tuesday night. The game’s unpredictability was foreshadowed before a ball was even kicked as the wrong theme music played before kickoff.
As is tradition with Champions League games, the players and officials line up at the center of the field while the tournament’s anthem is played in the stadium. There was one slight problem… the Europa League theme was played instead.
Aston Villa Europa League theme blooper
Both sets of players exchanged quizzical looks as Europe’s second-tier anthem filled Villa Park.
I’d like to imagine that at least one Aston Villa fan was attending their team’s first Champions League game this season and waited their whole life to hear the competition’s song played at Villa Park. They probably were buzzing with excitement only to instead be greeted with the “DUN NA NA NA NA!” of the Europa League.
Whoever is on aux duties at Villa Park will surely be facing a minimum of a five-game ban.
Despite the anthem miscue, the fans at Villa Park were still treated to a five-goal thriller as their side nearly pulled off an unthinkable comeback against the French champions.
An unforgettable night for a multitude of reasons.
