The second leg of the Madrid Derby in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday had high drama with the main focus being a Julián Alvarez penalty being disallowed during the shootout which Real Madrid won 4-2 after drawing 2-2 on aggregate.
Alvarez appeared to convert Atlético Madrid’s second penalty when he powered his penalty kick into the roof of the net despite slipping.
As Real’s Federico Valverde approached to begin the third round of penalties, the referee halted the shootout as VAR was reviewing something. Then the main referee signaled that Alvarez’s previous penalty had been chalked off.
Julián Alvarez penalty controversy vs Real Madrid
VAR ruled that Alvarez’s plant foot had touched the ball before he shot. Double touching the ball on a penalty kick isn’t legal in the laws of the game. Did VAR make the right call?
A look at the replay shows just how tight of a decision it was as the contact is so slight. VAR was satisfied, however, and the penalty didn’t count.
Despite some heroics from Dan Oblak to get Atlético level in the shootout again, the underdogs still fell short and lost 4-2 in the shootout. Atlético still have never defeated Los Blancos in the Champions League.
Real Madrid will face Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
