The headline of this story might be one of the more unique ones I’ve written in my five years with The18. An American striker scored a key goal at the same time a squirrel was invading the pitch.
Sargent’s squirrely goal took place during Norwich City’s 1-1 draw against Hull City on Saturday in the EFL Championship. In the 47th minute Norwich left back Kellen Fisher was running stride for stride with a furry rodent on the near sideline.
Despite the excellent run made by Hammy from “Over the Hedge” Fisher elected to swing the ball into the box toward Sargent.
The American finished cleanly with a flicked header to the bottom corner.
Josh Sargent Squirrel goal
No EFL Championship player has scored more goals for a single team than Norwich City’s Josh Sargent (38) since he started in the competition in 2022
Let’s talk about the pace on this squirrel too ️ pic.twitter.com/oVT7XkMaao— CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) February 15, 2025
What a crazy sequence of events to mark Sargent’s fifth goal in Norwich’s previous five games.
Sargent missed 14 games this season spanning from November to January with a groin injury. He made his return to the field on January 11 and has been on fire since coming back.

Sargent will likely be the United States men’s national team go-to striker next month for the Concacaf Nations League semifinal. Usual USMNT strikers Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are out with injuries meaning Sargent might finally have his chance to shine for the national team.
Injuries and form have limited his role with the USMNT over the previous five years. The 24-year-old’s last goal for the U.S. was in November 2019 in a Nations League game vs. Cuba.
Needless to say, he’s long overdue for a USMNT goal.
