Gio Reyna injury history: USMNT star suffers new setback in Dortmund training

Gio Reyna is expected to miss another month and-a-half with a groin injury after suffering a setback, announced Borussia Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin.

The United States men’s national team midfielder initially suffered the injury during the USMNT’s September window and has been out for club and country since.

Reyna will miss the next two international windows for the United States.

Reyna’s injury history is extensive with the 21-year-old battling injuries for most of his young career.

Here’s a breakdown of Reyna’s major injuries.

Gio Reyna injury history

  • Sept. 6, 2021: Hamstring injury (Missed 32 games and was out for 140 days)
  • Feb. 21, 2022: Hamstring injury (Missed 2 games and was out for 14 days)
  • April 8, 2022: Hamstring injury (Missed 9 games and was out for 108 days)
  • Aug. 8, 2022: Muscular problems (Missed 2 games and was out for 14 days)
  • Sept. 29, 2022: Muscle strain (Missed 3 games and was out for 10 days)
  • June 20, 2023: Fractured fibula (Missed 12 games and was out for 89 days)
  • Sept. 5, 2024: Groin injury (TBD until recovered)

Despite only being in his sixth season, Reyna has an injury history that looks like a veteran player.

This latest knock is a major blow for the USMNT as new head coach Mauricio Pochettino won’t be able to use Reyna until March. Reyna has only played for nine minutes this season with Dortmund so far.
