Thibaut Courtois Scores On Himself From A Difficult Angle

Nacer Chadli gets the assist.

My favorite Thibaut Courtois moments are when he looks like Frankenstein’s monster, letting out a world-weary scream while the football rolls through his way-too-long-legs.

“Why would my creator make me like this?! All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things!” Courtois can frequently be heard saying.

The reason for Courtois’ unbelievable ability in goal — and the reason he mocked Jordan Pickford for being a little T. Rex boy — is rooted in his everlasting war against the species who formed him and sent him “to this insupportable misery” of playing the game’s most lonely position.

On Wednesday, Belgium defeated Denmark 4-2 to advance to the Nations League finals, but the only lasting memory will be Courtois’ own goal in the 86th minute.

Should Nacer Chadli have played this ball back to him? Probably not.

Belgium and Denmark will meet again at next summer’s Euros in Group B alongside Russia and Finland.
