Gio Reyna in loan talks with Nottingham Forest to escape Borussia Dortmund’s bench

A Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest loan move could be on the table as the United States men’s national team attacking midfielder seeks playing time.

Reyna has seen miniscule action with Borussia Dortmund this season as manager Edin Terzic has opted to use basically anyone not named Reyna. The 21-year-old American has only started one Bundesliga game for Dortmund in the 2023-24 campaign and is only used as a late substitute.

Reyna’s next destination could be a completely new kind of challenge as he’s in talks with a loan move to Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest.

Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest loan talks

Reyna has been offered to a litany of clubs across Europe with some of the top prospects being Marseille, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Monaco and Wolves.

Any way out of Dortmund will do for the American whether it’s a loan or permanent transfer. The Bundesliga side would seek a price tag of around $16 million for a transfer according to ESPN.

As things stand a loan to Forest has the most traction with reports of competition from Sevilla. The Forest loan would see him team up with fellow USMNT teammate Matt Turner.

Is Nottingham a good move for Reyna?

Forest are in the middle of a relegation battle sitting only a few points from the drop. There’s also the potential threat of having points deducted for sanctions against the club for alleged breaches of the EPL’s profitability and sustainability rule.

If Forest were to have points deducted it would make them relegation favorites.

Head coach Nuno Espírito Santo does use a formation that could see Reyna play the No. 10 role which is good news.

Reyna’s main competition for a starting role would be Morgan Gibbs-White. The Forest attacking midfielder has gone the full 90 in nearly every game for Forest so far this season with two goals and three assists. Gibbs-White has been rumored to a move to Newcastle.

The notorious physicality of the Premier League is another concern fans have brought up given Reyna’s injury history.

If the loan to Forest goes through, then we’d give it a C grade.
