Dortmund Fears That USMNT Phenom Gio Reyna Could Be Out Injured For Rest Of 2021

The latest Gio Reyna injury update is bad news for Borussia Dortmund and USMNT fans. The soon to be 19-year-old hasn’t played since Sept. 3 when the U.S. traveled to El Salvador for the first World Cup qualifying game where he suffered a hamstring injury.

Dortmund manager Marco Rose said on Friday that Reyna has suffered setbacks and that the injury also affected nerves and a tendon.

“It’s really not foreseeable for me when he will be back in training with the team, I have to be honest,” Rose said. “But we hope that will happen before the end of this year.”

This is a massive blow for Dortmund and the USMNT. Reyna has often provided a spark for Gregg Berhalter’s U.S. team. Not having a young talent like Reyna for a qualifier against Mexico is a brutal loss.

Berhalter typically employed Reyna at the left wing position. Timothy Weah, Brenden Aaronson and Paul Arriola have all tried filling the role with mixed results.

If Reyna is out until Jan. 2022 then he will miss three games with the USMNT — two qualifiers and a friendly — and eight games with Dortmund.
