When you think of the number 13 in soccer only one player should come to mind: Alex Morgan.

The United States women’s national team legend retired from international and club play last year but will receive a special tribute from San Diego Wave FC. An Alex Morgan jersey retirement is coming.

San Diego Wave will retire Morgan’s No. 13 jersey on Sept. 7 for their home game against the Houston Dash. The date is special as it will mark one year since Morgan’s final game of her career.

The 35-year-old becomes the first player to have her number retired in the Wave’s short history. The California club began playing in 2022 with the USWNT icon as the team’s star player.

In her three seasons with the Wave Morgan made 62 appearances and scored 28 goals. She also helped lead the team to winning the 2023 NWSL Shield and the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup.

“Alex’s legacy goes far beyond goals and accolades. She helped lay the foundation for this Club and elevated the standard for what women’s soccer is today,” said Lauren Leichtman, Governor of San Diego Wave FC in a club statement.

“She made this city her home, inspired our fans and community, and helped define who we are. Her impact will be felt for generations, and it’s only fitting that her number becomes a permanent part of Wave FC history.”

Morgan’s role with San Diego lives on as she’s part of the club’s ownership group as a minority investor.
