Sevilla Stun Real Madrid, Halt Their Historic Unbeaten Streak At 40

Three days after Real Madrid heroically set the Spanish unbeaten streak record by scoring at the death against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, Sevilla returned the favor in La Liga action on Sunday.

A goal from Stevan Jovetic in the 92nd minute halted Real Madrid’s streak at 40 and blew open the La Liga title race after Sevilla’s 2-1 victory. Cristiano Ronaldo had put Real up 1-0 with a penalty in the 67th minute, but a Sergio Ramos own goal in the 85th leveled the scores.

Jovetic’s brilliant effort from outside the box in stoppage time brought his club to within one point of Real in the table. Barcelona are two back, but Real Madrid have a game in hand on both clubs.

Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico gifted Real Madrid the lead when he needlessly clattered Daniel Carvajal near the right-hand side of the endline. After Vitolo scuffed the penalty spot with his boot, Ronaldo proceeded to throw the football at his back and a scuffle ensued.

That bit of gamesmanship was settled when Ronaldo buried the spot kick and Real were up 1-0 in the 67th minute.

But Sevilla looked to have snatched a late equalizer when Sergio Ramos - the man whose Panenka penalty had drawn the ire of Sevilla supporters on Thursday - could only divert a free kick into his own net.

To the delight of the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan crowd, things only got better. Jovetic’s finish capped a brilliant comeback, ending Madrid’s streak and handing them their first loss of the season.
