Everybody loves the 1999 team.
Netflix is developing The 99ers, a feature film inspired by the iconic 1999 U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team that won the World Cup on home soil.
Netflix to release documentary on 1999 USWNT World Cup triumph
The movie will be based on Jeré Longman’s book The Girls of Summer: The U.S. Women's Soccer Team and How It Changed the World, and will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nicole Kassell, according to Deadline.
Netflix first acquired the rights to the book in 2020, but the project had remained under wraps until now.
Led by legends such as Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy, the USWNT triumphed over China in a dramatic final at the Rose Bowl in front of 90,000 fans — one of the most important and landmark achievements in U.S. Soccer history.
The upcoming film aligns with Netflix’s broader push into women's soccer, as the streaming service prepares to exclusively broadcast the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031. The deal marks the first time a World Cup — men’s or women’s — will be streamed exclusively in the United States.
