Mauro Icardi Hat Trick Powers Inter To 3-2 Win In Milan Derby

A Mauro Icardi hat trick inspired Inter Milan to a 3-2 victory over AC Milan in the Milan derby on Sunday at the San Siro. The two Serie A Derby della Madonnina matchups last year ended in 2-2 draws and it appeared Sunday’s would as well after Milan scored a late equalizer, but Icardi scored his third goal with a penalty shot in the 90th minute.

Inter Milan moved up to second place in Serie A with the victory and remained unbeaten in league play. Milan lost for the fourth time and is now in 10th place. Inter went ahead two times before finally taking the lead for good on the verge of stoppage time.

Inter took the lead in the 28th minute when Mauro Icardi got in between two Milan defenders to slot home a cross from Antonio Candreva.

Milan thought it had the equalizer moments into the second half when Mateo Musacchio’s strike was called back for offside. Musacchio hammered home a rebound from an Andre Silva shot that struck the post, but he was in an offside position when the initial shot was hit.

Milan did tie the match at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Suso sent in a curling effort from 20 yards into the far left corner, leaving Inter keeper Samir Handanovic with no chance. Handanovic had gotten a paw to a cracking shot from Suso six minutes earlier but couldn’t come close this time.

Inter took the lead back in the 63rd minute with an acrobatic volley from Icardi that nestled into the far right corner. The Argentine striker was left all alone in the box and did well to sort out his body to get the shot off on a cross from Ivan Perisic that was not easy to handle.

Giacomo Bonaventura scored another Milan equalizer in the 81st minute. Fabio Borini sent a ball across from the right side that Andre Silva flicked with his back heel. Bonaventura was able to get a foot to the cross to slide the ball into the back of the net off the post and off Handanovic.

But Inter won all three points when Icardi completed his hat trick by slotting a penalty kick past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 90th minute.
