The World Sucks Right Now, But This 12-Yard Backheel Goal Does Not

As hundreds of thousands die from a global pandemic, as livelihoods are ruined by a tanking economy and as Minneapolis burns amid protests over a black man dying at the hands of police, 2020 has already reached a decade’s worth of devastation in five months.

Sport is among the best of distractions in the worst of times but COVID-19 has brought most of the world’s football to a halt. Fortunately, the countries that took the novel coronavirus pandemic seriously have been able to resume sports. The K League in South Korea has been providing us with worthy distractions for a few weeks now.

With the Premier League and LaLiga still a few weeks out and sports in the U.S. even further away, the K League and Bundesliga have been our haven for distraction.

On Friday, it was Daegu FC’s Brazilian forward Cesinha who provided us with some sauce to get us through our day.

During a 1-1 draw with Sangju Sangmu, Cesinha broke a scoreless deadlock early in the second half with a 12-yard backheel beauty. (Goal starts at 3:10 in video below.)

(We absolutely love that the K League features Son Heung-min during goal replays even though he doesn’t even play in the league.

Sangju came back with a goal 12 minutes later (3:55 in the video) to earn a 1-1 draw. It was a nice distraction from a world in which journalists are being arrested for no reason while people caught on camera killing someone remained free.

(To be clear, when we say distraction, we do not mean we should ignore what is happening in Minnesota and around the world. The murder of another black man by police must not be ignored. And we still must heed doctors and scientists to prevent the spread of COVID-19.)
