USMNT Learns Inaugural Concacaf Nations League Schedule

The inaugural Concacaf Nations League schedule was announced Tuesday.

The United States, the seeded team in Group A, will host Cuba on Oct. 11 and Canada on Nov. 15. The away legs are Oct. 15 in Canada and Nov. 19 in Cuba.

For a quick refresher on what exactly the Concacaf Nations League is, check out the video below. Essentially, it’s the UEFA Nations League but for Concacaf teams, with promotion and relegation providing some sense of meaning to otherwise meaningless friendlies.

Most importantly, it means more TV rights sales for Concacaf.

Qualifying for the Nations League began back in September. The top six Concacaf teams did not have to qualify, instead being placed in League A for reaching the hexagonal of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Nations League qualifying had a few surprises, such as Jamaica failing to reach League A and Montserrat, a country of fewer than 5,000, nearly earning a spot in League A and the 2019 Gold Cup. My personal favorite moment was Sint Maarten beating Saint Martin in an historic first-ever meeting between the two neighbors.

Because Cuba and Canada play home-and-home in September, the U.S. will have the September FIFA international dates free for friendlies of their choosing. Mexico announced Monday it would play a friendly against a yet-to-be-announced team in San Antonio on Sept. 10. Personally, I think the two should get together for a fun time in the Alamo City, but that’s just me.

U.S. Soccer has yet to announce where it will play the Concacaf Nations League matches or who it will play in September.

Mexico’s Concacaf Nations League schedule has El Tri playing Panama on Oct. 15 and Nov. 15 and Bermunda on Sept. 8 and Nov. 19.

The top team in each of the four League A groups will meet in the Nations League Championship in March. The bottom team in each group is relegated to League B, replaced by the top finishers in the four League B groups of four.

The groups for each league are as follows. You can find the entire Concacaf Nations League schedule here.
