Forget Dembélé, Barcelona’s Best Young Player Is 20-Year-Old Patri Guijarro

The last time we talked about Patri Guijarro, the Barcelona midfielder was winning the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at the U-20 Women’s World Cup in August.

The 20-year-old was a part of the Spanish team that finished second to Japan in the U-20 tournament and she watched earlier this month as her U-17 counterparts won the U-17 Women’s World Cup through the sparkling play of her Barcelona teammate Clàudia Pina.

But it’s high time we talk about Patri Guijarro again because of what the central midfielder did against Málaga in the women’s Primera División in Spain on Saturday. In our opinion, she’s a far more enthralling youngster to watch in Barcelona than even Ousmane Dembélé, the men’s team’s precocious 21-year-old.

Barcelona routed Málaga 4-0 to complete an unbeaten first half of the 2018 season. England international Toni Duggan and Dutch former player of the year Lieke Martens both scored and might grab some of the headlines, but this win was all about young Patri Guijarro.

Guijarro scored two magnificent goals and would have had a hat trick but for a third rocket bouncing off the post, setting up Martens’ goal in the process.

The No. 12 scored the game’s first goal in the 18th minute, stealing the ball in midfield and blasting a shot from about 25 yards out. She completed the scoring in the 80th minute with another powerful shot that left Málaga’s English goalkeeper Chelsea Ashurst no chance.

The full highlights from Patri Guijarro and the Barcelona women.

And one more look at Guijarro’s second goal.

After the win, Barcelona trails first-place Atlético Madrid by one point in the league standings heading into 2019. Atlético, the defending champ, has 42 points with 14 wins and one loss (to Barça) while Barcelona has 13 wins and two draws to stand at 41 points.

Patri Guijarro has 16 caps with the senior Spanish national team and could be one to watch in France next summer. Spain was drawn into Group B with Germany, China and South Africa.
