United States, Australia, Japan and more: Countries that call it ‘soccer’ instead of ‘football’

When it comes to the world’s most popular sport, most of the globe agrees on one thing: it’s called football. But not every country is on the same page.

While the United States and Canada often get singled out for calling the game soccer, they’re not as alone as many think.

Here’s a look at 10 countries that use the term soccer—either officially, colloquially, or in common usage—showing that it’s not just North America going against the grain.

10 countries that call it 'soccer' instead of 'football'

1. United States

No surprise here. With American football reigning supreme, soccer became the go-to term to avoid confusion. It's deeply embedded in media, sports leagues (like Major League Soccer), and everyday language.

2. Canada

Canada also uses soccer to differentiate it from gridiron football, which is played at both professional and university levels. Like the U.S., the term is widespread and officially recognized.

3. Australia

Down Under, soccer is used to distinguish it from several popular codes of football—especially Australian Rules Football and rugby. Even though Football Australia has tried to push "football," soccer still dominates casual use.

4. New Zealand

Much like Australia, New Zealand has a multi-code football culture. Rugby is king, so soccer helps avoid confusion. Even the national team is affectionately known as the “All Whites.”

5. Japan

The Japanese word sakkā (サッカー) comes directly from the English word soccer, and it’s what most people call the sport. Though “futtobōru” exists, it’s rarely used for the global game.

6. South Africa

While football is common, soccer is widely used in media and conversation, especially among younger generations. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) keeps the name prominent.

7. Ireland

Though association football is growing, Gaelic football is still hugely popular. To avoid confusion, soccer is commonly used, especially in casual conversation.

8. Philippines

With basketball dominating the sports scene, soccer is used to describe the sport when it comes up. The Philippines Football League still reflects international norms, but the term soccer remains common.

9. Papua New Guinea

In this rugby-loving nation, soccer is used frequently to distinguish the sport from rugby league and union.

10. Bermuda

Another small nation with British ties where soccer remains the more commonly used term—especially in youth and amateur levels.
