Thibaut Courtois Smokes Ronaldo To Start Move That Leads To Opener Against Portugal

There were two shots on goal in the first half of the much-anticipated Belgium-Portugal Round of 16 Euro 2020 match on Sunday. The first was a scorching free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo parried wide by Thibaut Courtois; the second the Thorgan Hazard goal vs Portugal, which started when Courtois dribbled by Ronaldo.

With two heavyweights meeting early in the knockout stages, the teams spent most of the first half feeling each other out. There were few real chances on goal, but Ronaldo did trouble Courtois with this free kick that he actually hit on target.

Belgium probably had the better of the play in the first half and took the lead through the best Hazard on the pitch on Sunday, Thorgan. While his brother Eden wore the captain’s armband, Thorgan, two years younger, was more influential.

In the 42nd minute, Courtois started an offensive move by sending Ronaldo flying with a bit of a dangerous-but-effective play in his own six-yard box.

Ronaldo’s not known for his defense, and he’s just trying to sneak in to steal the ball, but no player likes to be the victim of a move like that, especially from a keeper.

Moments later, the ball was worked to Thorgan Hazard, who smashed a swerving shot Rui Patrício could do nothing with.

Belgium led 1-0 at halftime and Portugal was a bit lucky João Palhinha only received one yellow card in the first half.
