Scotland Scores First Goal At A Major Tournament Since 1998, But Croatian Class Eliminates The Scots

Scotland scored in a major tournament for the first time in my 22 years on this planet. The Scots finally found the back of the net through Callum McGregor in their third, and final, game at Euro 2020 in a 3-1 defeat to Croatia. This Scotland goal vs Croatia was a historic moment for the small nation.

Scotland Goal vs Croatia

Despite conceding early, Scotland held the 2018 World Cup runner-up in check for two-thirds of the game.

Through 60 minutes it looked like the battle in Glasgow was going to be fought to the bitter end. Then, it felt like Croatia players remembered who they were and that they have a Ballon d’Or winner on the roster.

Luka Modrić had been quiet in Euro 2020 up until the 62nd minute of the game against Scotland. This outside-of-the-foot strike from Modrić was a reminder of what the Real Madrid man is capable of.

Before we continue, I have a major bone to pick with some people. This Modrić goal was fantastic, but it wasn’t better than Patrik Schick’s bomb from midfield.

Dear person running the CBS Golazo Twitter account, I'm declaring war on you. Meet me at the flagpole: 3 p.m. sharp.

Poor Scotland; the two best goals of the tournament both came against the Scots.

Ivan Perišić, who scored Croatia’s opening goal in the 2018 World Cup Final, took the remaining air out of Hampden Park with a game-sealing goal in the 77th minute.

The defeat saw Scotland finish bottom of Group D and get eliminated in the group stage of a major tournament for the 11th straight time. Scotland has yet to ever sniff the knockout stages.

The 3-1 victory for Croatia was enough for the World Cup runner-up to leapfrog the Czech Republic and finish second in Group D. England, Croatia and the Czech Republic will all advance to the Round of 16.
