Gareth Bale hints at a possible return with newly promoted Wrexham

Season 2 of Welcome to Wrexham is going to be absolutely insane with coverage of the club's wild FA Cup run and historic National League title, but just imagine a third season, covering Wrexham's 2023-24 League Two campaign, with a 34-year-old Gareth Bale starring after coming out of retirement.

That idea seemed entirely preposterous as recently as Monday — when you have a nickname like "The Golfer" you're likely enjoying your time off — but then Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney shared a video of Bale congratulating him on the promotion.

McElhenney also had a message for Bale:

The five-time Champions League winner gave a cryptic reply:

You can also see a small goal in the background — maybe he's training!

Is Gareth Bale going to Wrexham?

I don't think so. Directly above this reply on Bale's Twitter page is his pinned tweet about retiring. And while Bale's obviously got the Welsh connection with Wrexham, he was born in Cardiff and supports the Bluebirds (currently in the EFL Championship).

Bale quickly called time on his LAFC career and it was clear that his only motivation at the end was representing Wales at the World Cup. The idea of getting Wrexham into League One isn't going to get him off the golf course, but imagine if Bale signed a short-term contract like Ben Foster did and smashed home a free kick in the FA Cup?
