Sorry to Ruin Your Day But You’ve Probably Been Saying “Offsides” Wrong Your Whole Life

The offside rule is one which causes a lot of controversy in soccer: was he or wasn’t he onside? For players and refs alike, the line is blurred. This same sort of grey area and sense of uncertainty presents itself in analyzing the semantics of the word itself: is it “offside” or “offsides”?

Drum roll, please.

Most Americans say “offsides” and the eyeballs of soccer purists everywhere bulge out of their skulls. Yes, technically, the pluralized “offsides” is incorrect. It seems minor but you’d be surprised how worked up people can get about the seemingly small addition of the “s”. Perhaps it is just one more piece of evidence used by the rest of the soccer world to slander preposterous Americans.

Now you know and now you can brag to American teammates, coaches, and refs. Go, you.
