Alex Morgan’s professional soccer career is over as she walked off the field for one last time on Sunday in an emotional farewell. On the international stage she finishes her career with 224 appearances for the United States women’s national team and 123 goals.
One statistic stands out about the rest, however.

When the team needed a hero to step up it was so often Morgan. Even her first-ever goal for the USWNT was a late-game equalizer vs. China back in 2010.
One month later Morgan was scoring another crucial late goal as she found the back of the net in the 94th minute vs. Italy in a World Cup playoff. Without this goal the USWNT may have not qualified for the 2011 World Cup and altered the course of the team’s popularity and dominance in the future years.
Perhaps her two greatest moments will be the headers she scored against Canada in the Olympic semifinal and England in the 2019 World Cup semifinal.
