A Sergio Ramos panenka fail was one of several lowlights for Monterrey on Wednesday during the Mexican club’s shocking 6-2 defeat to Toluca.
With Rayados leading 1-0 early in the first half, Ramos had an opportunity to double his side’s lead from the spot. The 39-year-old attempted a cute chip up the middle, however Toluca goalkeeper Hugo González stood his ground to make a simple save.

Ramos’ penalty miss was the first domino in a litany of Monterrey woes as Toluca would go on to score FOUR goals in the first half.
The veteran defender is historically lethal from the spot. Ramos has taken 41 penalties in his professional career and scored 35 of them. Wednesday’s game was the first time he’s failed to score a penalty kick in five years.
Attempting a panenka penalty kick is some serious risky business that even the best fail to pull off. Ramos’ former PSG teammate Lionel Messi also attempted a panenka penalty kick this month and was denied.

The moral of the story here is that if you’re going to try a panenka penalty just know you’re either going to look really really cool or make a fool of yourself. There’s no inbetween.
