These Monks Combined Soccer And Kung Fu In Real Life. And Succeeded.

Depending on your feelings about foreign kung fu movies and soccer, Shaolin Soccer may or may not be the greatest film of all time. The absurd Hong Kong martial arts comedy has it all: good guy Shoalin monks who use soccer to spread the art of Kung Fu to the world, bad guys who have a team called “Team Evil” that plays against the good guy monks, an evil businessman arch villain supporting Team Evil, and an American drug Team Evil uses to try and beat the previously unbeatable good guy monks.

If all of that sounds like too much, trust me, it is, in the best possible way:

Shaolin monks exist in real life and, while I am sure they know about soccer and probably play it every now and then, there’s just no way they can pull off the stunts in Shaolin soccer, right? It’s not physically possible.

The thing is, I’ve found some pictures that make it look like they came a lot closer to mimicking the movie than I ever thought possible. I’m lost for words, and searching for answers.

It starts off tame enough.

But then there’s this.

And I don’t even know what this is. Clearly they are still learning the game.

Then they start to pull off absurd things. And apparently they did these things on a soccer field too. Where is the footage of this game, Internet?

And they popped the ball too. I hope they popped the ball performing some move that was too epic to photograph.

I can’t tell you how happy this last pic makes me.

Now, some of you are probably wondering where the hell these photos came from. I don’t know. They have shown up in my wanderings around the Internet and no amount of half-assed googling seems to be able to turn up an answer.

And I think I like it this way. This way I can pretend that these soccer playing Shoalin monks really do exist
